| Joe is a shareholder at Cooper & Walinski, where he has practiced since 1981 and serves as chair of the firm's Insurance Practice Group. He practices civil litigation, most often involving claims for indemnity under insurance and merger and acquisition agreements. In the insurance context, he represents policyholders seeking indemnity for many types of losses, including those arising from theft, employee dishonesty and environmental, asbestos and product liabilities. Joe has represented policyholders in coverage litigation in Florida, California, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Texas. He has also pursued coverage under policies issued in foreign countries.
Joe is a Life Fellow of the Ohio State Bar Foundation (the professional honorary for Ohio lawyers) and is listed in Best Lawyers in America (2004-Present). He spoke on insurance coverage for employee theft losses at the 2006 Risk & Insurance Management Society (RIMS) National Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii, and at the same conference in Dallas, Texas in 1999. He co-authored Litigating the International Case, a paper prepared for the Manufacturers Alliance Product Liability and Product Safety Council meeting in April 1998.
In the non-insurance context, Joe handles litigation involving indemnity disputes arising from acquisition/divestiture agreements. He has been trial counsel in a number of such disputes, including Grupo Condumex, S.A. de C.V., v. SPX Corporation, et al (6th Cir. 2006); Unisys Corp. v. TRINOVA Corp. (1997-98 AAA Commercial Arbitration (New York); TRINOVA Corp. v. Pilkington Bros. PLC (1994) 70 Ohio St. 3d 271; Dana Corporation v. Paley and Bobier (1988 AAA Commercial Arbitration (Chicago)); and Hartford Accident and Indemnity Company v. LTV Corporation and Dana Corporation, 774 F.2d 677 (5th Cir. 1985).
Joe also serves as National Discovery Counsel for a major manufacturer.
Joe received a Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude in 1975 and a law degree cum laude in 1978, both from The University of Toledo. Joe was an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Lucas County, Ohio, where he served as a trial attorney from 1978 to 1981.
